5th Annual Mid-Autumn Moon Festival

Norfolk Festevents, in conjunction with several local Chinese community organizations, will be presenting the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival. The festival will feature Master of Ceremonies, Cheryl Tan of WAVY TV10 and Moon Goddess, Jenny Wong. The festival will take place in TowneBank Fountain Park on Sunday, September 19, 2010, Noon - 4 pm. The afternoon will highlight family activities and foods that will allow festival guests to explore and experience the Chinese culture to its fullest.
Norfolk's Mid-Autumn Moon Festival commemorates one of the most celebrated Chinese holidays and is rich in Asian culture and tradition. Normally celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month in observance of the bountiful autumn harvest, the event can also be held at various times during the autumn season. The Chinese often compare the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival to the American Thanksgiving when families and friends come together to celebrate the bountiful harvest with a plentiful feast.
2010 Festival features include
- Lion and Dragon Dances by Jow-Ga Kung Fu Association of Virginia Beach.
- Chinese cuisine prepared by the Pagoda Restaurant.
- Moon Cakes available for tasting and purchase by Friends of the Pagoda & Oriental Garden Foundation.
- Authentic Chinese Food available for purchase provided by the Pagoda Restaurant.
- Children's activities: Chinese writing, lantern making, Moon Festival story craft, Chinese games, Origami Panda Make and Takes, and more!
- The Moon Goddess will be at the festival and will lead the Children's lantern parade at the closing ceremony.
- Performances include: Mid Autumn Moon Festival Story, Chinese Wedding, Chinese Cultural Dances and Music, Chinese Zither and Erhu, Tai-Chi (Tai-Ji) and more!
- Chinese Organizations Represented: The Blue Heron Chapter of the Sumi-e Society, Eastern Virginia Chinese-American Association, First Chinese Baptist Church, Organizations of Chinese Americans- Eastern Virginia Chapter, OCA-EVC Folk Dance Club, Tidewater Chinese School, TCS Asian Performing Art Club, Eastern Virginia Chinese School Association (EV-CSA), Peninsula Chinese School and Peninsula Chinese American Association.
- Chinese Exhibits onsite: Bonsai Exhibit and an art exhibit by The Blue Heron Chapter of the Sumi-e Society.
